This is a unique San Francisco residence; rich in history and further enriched by a collaborative design process in the current renovation. The original home was a typical Victorian built in 1866, however in 1916 Julia Morgan was commissioned to renovate the home. The front façade remains true to the Italianate Julia Morgan transformation. The intent throughout the project is to create greater connection between the main rooms on each floor and between each floor and the landscape, while respecting the architectural legacy of the home. The large, flat lot and detached structure are unique features for this highly urban San Francisco neighborhood. In the redesign of the kitchen and living room the experience of this exterior space is maximized with a wall of window in the form of large bi-fold doors opening onto a new balcony. The opportunity to use the landscape as a curtain of privacy bolsters the increased openness at the rear of the home. The piano nobile is refashioned to a unorthodox yet luxe master suite. Here, the grand spatial essence is maintained while still allowing for a sense of intimacy by employing built-in furniture to float the bedroom proper in the larger Julia Morgan room. The integration of the historic elements, modern architectural details, custom furniture, and the homeowner’s eclectic art collection reveal a true symbiosis in which the old and the new coexist to the advantage and elevation of both.
