CANYON HOUSE

CANYON HOUSE

The design of this residence physically and philosophically embraces the beautiful setting above a San Carlos canyon. The home is divided by its own internal canyon that separates the public from private spaces. A pair of bridges span the home’s canyon and provide a visual axis for a stunning view of San Francisco Bay. Our palette of materials embraces an unadorned design sensibility and expresses the home’s structure. The concrete walls are experienced inside and out, the heaviness of these materials juxtaposed with wide expanses of glass that capture the views and emphasize the building’s connection to the dramatic site. The perforated and corrugated Cor-Ten steel scrim frames the expansive views, creates visual patterning, and provides shading. The home’s design incorporates passive cooling elements, including shading from the external scrim and a natural convection loop.
