COW HOLLOW

COW HOLLOW

This project was an existing house that was part of a 1968 development of six houses. They were built as speculative homes with generous floor plans and very plain architectural detailing. The basic structure was both sound and well laid out, while the style was both dated and inappropriate. The facade intent was to give a stately Mediterranean feeling and to emphasize the vertical nature of a row house by making the openings taller and more narrow, as well as creating a hierarchical facade, with a plinth or base, and a cornice detail. The interior aesthetic was completely altered, by removing a series of closets to open the central stair, adding millwork, wainscot and more detailed trim throughout. The stair was opened to all three stories and illuminated with a large skylight in the center. The rooms were also opened up to provide a home more suited for entertaining. The master bedroom was upgraded with a fireplace, and an intricately detailed master suite, with rooms arranged enfilade.
