This renovation project began with an 1896 Victorian that had been badly maintained, the front façade obliterated by aluminum windows and siding that was painted a shocking shade of mint green. The project consisted of two units that were gutted and returned to their original glory on the front and formal portions of the home, and expanded with an addition to the rear which replaced the ubiquitous enclosed porch and rear stair. The lower unit was expanded to include a master bedroom on the ground floor, with a new sunny dining room at the rear, with reflected light flowing through a galley kitchen into an open stair. The upper unit has a roof deck above the additions below, creating a sunny outdoor space complimenting the enlarged kitchen. An ingenious stair was tucked adjacent to the deck to replace the classic rear stair that visually separates the house from the garden. The front façade was carefully exposed and the original siding was salvaged. We used the exposed paint shadows to recreate an interpretation of the original façade. The restoration of custom details included recreated cast capitals, new wood windows and corbels.
