This renovation to an existing home on the Presidio Wall emphasizes the dramatic effect a few well chosen elements can have on a project without requiring an aggressive program. Previously the house was ‘transitional’ in its stylistic intent, with an indeterminate result. By taking some elements of the home that had potential, such as the elliptical entry stair, and renovating them with a new railing, a reduction in trim and the addition of casework, we were able to successfully refocus the eye and dramatically alter the aesthetic to an understated contemporary style. Other areas of the house were reworked to address shortcomings, such as the master suite, where we created a serene spa experience. The understated use of a rich palette of materials includes wide plank rift oak floor, cherry and Makore custom veneer cabinetry complement the interior. From the exterior very little was altered, but with a new front door, landscaping and an architecturally designed garden fence we were able to simplify the façade.
