The steeply sloping lot was the site of a smaller home burned during the devastating Oakland Hills fire in 1991. The site is accessed from a private road off Skyline Boulevard. The lot slopes down from the private road to create a home below the road, with a rooftop garage. The dramatic views stretch from Downtown Oakland to the south, across the Bay to Mount Tamalpais to the north. The design intent was to create a private and secure home, with minimal visual mass. This was attained with a 25’ high concrete retaining wall carved into the landscape. To contrast the heavy, enclosed nature of the back of the house, we cantilevered the living room 10’ beyond the house with glass and steel to maximize the view. The owner will live entirely on one level, with the lower level dedicated to an office, guest bedroom and work room. The design of the entry sequence was intended to frame the view and deemphasize the garage doors. The garage is turned from the private road to create an entry court and present the curving copper clad roof and wall of the garage as a front elevation.
